Fall came early to New York City for the Eddy Matzger Access to Speed Workshop, July 30, 31, and August 1, 1999. Leaves and twigs littered the ground not because of some cold snap but no thanks to the unending drought and intense heat of the summer of '99.

Skaters in general, and New York skaters in particular, are a breed unto themselves, so baking temperatures and occasional tree detritus had little effect on energy and enthusiasm levels during the 16 hours of on-skate instruction throughout the weekend.

In fact, the city of New York was fully behind the success of the workshop, sending out an employee in a golf cart to meticulously blow the practice track free of obstacles. Workshop participants could then practice their paces unfettered by the whims of nature.

The Access to Speed workshop was supplemented TYWINCAM bearings, Explore wheels, Salomon skates, PowerBar, Transpack, Wigwam socks, and Raymond Verdaguer.

Workshoppers were struck by the amount of material covered over the weekend, lamenting that there simply wasn't enough time to adequately practice each part before moving on.

Feedback from survivors came quickly and with typical New York spirit:
"Hi Bob & Eddy, I just wanted to let you know how incredible the workshop this weekend was for me. I am so inspired by Eddy's "can do" attitude and vibrant personality. You break everything down so well to make understanding the concepts so easy.

I look forward to next years workshop to find out how far I can take what I learned this weekend and actually incorporate your technique into my skating.

Thank you for an amazing experience that I will never forget!!!!!"
