Gusto was in no short supply at the Eddy Matzger Workshop in sunny Irvine, CA, October 17-19, 2003. Skaters lived it up and discovered a new sense of body awareness through 16 hours of on and off skate exercises.
29 skate fanatics gathered each day while the workshop dished out challenge after challenge. In the end, balance and timing -- not fitness or strength -- unlocked the secrets of speed for which all were hungry.
As if skating weren't already enough, students were able to chart their progress in a very visual way when they got together Saturday evening to snarf down dinner while having their skating strokes picked apart to the bone.
"You've got a great way of highlighting everybody's strengths while still offering some serious suggestions about how to improve," said one student at the conclusion of the workshop.
Participants were frequently singled out to perform their best versions of certain drills, while the others ogled, admired, and ultimately applauded the demonstrators' efforts.
The weather and the action was searing hot out at Roooog and Virginia's personal nirvana skating lot. Plenty of ice cream was eaten! And the big treat at the end, the team time trial and mass race, allowed everybody to showcase their new skating skills.
Special thanks to TWINCAM, Wigwam, Transpack, Bobward, Barrie,Raymond Verdaguer artwork, and Rog and Virginia Olson for the hoots and hollers galore.
