Skaters took advantage of the calm before the storm, September 10, 11, and 12, 1999, at the Fort Lauderdale, FL, Access to Speed Workshop. After a week of rain, an eerie spell of purgatorial heat settled in.

Even slight exertions produced running beads of perspiration, so it was commonplace to hear sloshing noises as participants waded through the Great Salt Lakes in their own skates. Skaters became so consumed by the fanning flames of their new skating knowledge, however, that a buzzing air of excitement never abated.

All gamely overcame the vagaries of the weather, and devoted themselved to serious learning. While some reposed in the shade, others chomped at the bit for the opportunity to go into extremis, whether it be doing a stretchcord tractor pull, a jumping nose, knees, toes triangle, a one-legged uphill propelling snake skate, a pre-loading static squat, a deep knee bend while rollin on a single skate, or any of a number of other tortuous exercises.

"Thank you for a fabulous workshop," wrote one survivor who flew in from New York City ."I was quite serious about my comments at the end of the weekend. Your enthusiasm and positive approach brought out the best in the group. It was a hot and brutal weekend but your enthusuasm, encouragement, and humor were the carrots that fed our learning curves."

Each Access to Speed workshop participant was generously endowed with TWINCAM ABEC-5 signature bearings, creamy white 80mm Explore racing wheels, gel hand sliders from Salomon skates, PowerBar energy bars and PowerGel, Transpack storage systems and sunglasses, Wigwam socks, and Raymond Verdaguer art on a shirt.
