Access to Speed participants learned how to get more out of their motors during a full weekend of skating in Detroit. Eddy Matzger rolled his students through a whole production line of drills and exercises which readied them for skating in the real world.

On Friday night workshoppers got into the mood while watching skate videos on a giant projection television. Saturday night they got to see themselves tackling the cirriculum and had a chance to get critiqued with frame by frame digital video analysis.

The enthusiasm of the mixed bunch bordered on delirium, so happy were skaters to discover strength and speed they never knew they possessed. Some, like 16 year-old Billy, honed their double push technique; others, happily ensconced in middle age, refined their balance and edge control and uncovered new power destined to help them shave major minutes off of previous bests.

Everybody threw lots of fear out the window and tanked up on confidence. Although no one left feeling invincible, everybody was ready by Sunday afternoon to brave the streets on the way to running a stage race in the high school parking lot.
The Access to Speed Workshop was spoiled rotten by Dan Tripp and Walter and Coopie, as well as by sponsors Salomon, TWINCAM, Explore, Transpack, Wigwam, and Bobward Flynn.
