Tough times call for a tough workshop, and the Eddy Matzger Workshop fit the bill in the nation's capital, May 7-9, 2004.

At the center of the storm was the Red Cross, whose headquarters the workshop used for the evening lecture on Friday and the videotape review on Saturday.

On the other side of the Potomac were the softening grounds. Although some might argue that Eddy put his students under duress, it was not without consent, and the results were fantastic. In 16 hours of training, students made years of progress.

Time was devoted to practicing first without skates so that when the skates were finally on, the moves seemed familiar.

The heat was on when participants were summoned to demonstrate their new skills in front of the group, and applause broke out every time people got up the gumption to give it a whirl in spite of being frequently dog-tired and whipsawed by confusion.

"This workshop was everything and more that it was cracked up to be!" said one participant. "I can't decide whether it's your skating skills or your people skills that are the most phenomenal," said another.

"You don't charge nearly enough for the workshop," commented a satisfied skater. "It was worth it just to watch the demonstrations!" said another.

TWINCAM, Wigwam, Transpack, Carol Patch, Bob Flynn, the ghost of Barrie, and Rembrandt toothpaste gave smiles to all.
