Students were brimming over with energy and enthusiasm at Eddy Matzger's Access to Speed Workshop, May 21, 22, and 23 in Bedford, MA. With the work ethic of medical residents, 24 skaters doggedly applied themselves to the execution of exercises and drills. Many were rewarded with epiphanous moments warranting out-loud exaltation.

The workshop, sponsored heavily by Salomon skates, TWINCAM bearings, Explore Wheels, Transpack storage systems, Wigwam socks, and PowerBar, reminded many of a college survey course. "It started out with the basics but quickly expanded to cover the whole spectrum of skating. With so much material building upon itself, it got out of hand rather quickly," said one slightly bemused skater.

Many returnees from last year's workshop had booked so much progress in the interim that instructor Eddy could scarcely recognize their previous skating selves. A large portion of them had upgraded to the ever increasingly popular five wheel iteration of the inline skate. The skate of great favor was Salomon, and skaters live in their skates for nearly 16 hours.

Explore wheel hawker Verne Yates was on hand to observe the gripalisciousness of his wheels, and participants were effusive in their praise and gratitude for the goods. Verne surfs and golfs but yet must skate. The quaint town of Bedford was made hugely hospitable thanks to hosts John and Mary in their white and green shingled house on the town square, built way back when. As soon as the soreness fades, maybe they'll be eager to do their 5th workshop!
