Copious amounts of skate mojo came together at the Access to Speed Workshop in Ann Arbor, MI, June 4, 5, and 6, 1999. Skater Eddy Matzger treated and released 20 students over the course of the weekend.

The gung-ho group, a diverse lot from across the spectrum, met at the outdoor parking facility of the Environmental Protection Agency in Ann Arbor. Despite an ozone alert and rapidly mounting heat and humidity, skaters stayed the course and broke on through to the other side with improved efficiency and speed on skates.

"I have just survived Eddy's workshop and first off I will say that it is worth it's weight in gold," wrote one workshop survivor within hours after completing the 16 hour marathon on skates.

"My skating ability has vastly improved. I recommend this workshop to anyone . . ." the participant continued. He also wrote of the way Eddy was good at "breaking down the harmony of skating into its components and describing the importance of each. The drills taught are necessary to attain good form. He videotapes your form and then gives suggestions on how to improve on it. His knowledge of the sport is seemingly endless."

The workshop was heavily supported by TWINCAM bearings, Salomon skates, Explore wheels, PowerBar, Transpack and Transware, and Wigwam socks, leading many to declare it an early Christmas. Big thanks go out to Dave Cooper too, who spent a whole day after the workshop wiring the batch conversion potential of a particularly sweet machine Kurt found in the closet.
