Dan skis uphill for the sole purpose of going back down, and he gets the most he can out of it! Here he is demonstrating textbook telemark technique. The basic ideas are the same whether linking snowplow, parallel, or telemark turns: weight the edge of the ski while in a turn and unweight the ski to set up for the next turn. Dan compresses his weight onto his skis during each turn, and extends his legs to unweight inbetween each turn. Notice that while his skis are turning underneath him and his lower body leans into each turn, his upper body stays relatively fixed and upright, facing the downhill. He reaches out in front to plant each pole, which signifies the end of one turn and the beginning of the next. Also, he keeps his hands in front of him at all times. This helps to maintain balance and upper body position.
