In the weeks preceeding the first Dan Burger Skate-to-Ski Clinic of the new century the weather reports were painting a bleak picture, forcasting tons of snow and cold temperatures. But on Saturday, February 5th, those that came out to Tahoe Donner Cross Country were treated to blue skies and excellent snow conditions.
Clinic attendees learned all sorts of techniques for navagating snow on skate-skis. In-line skating skills transfer to the snow quite well, and the group was quick to pick up techniques such as herringbone, V1, and V2. Pushing off of an edged ski and using the poles efficiently became the biggest obstacles to overcome.
Huge progress was made by all who attended. The learning curve for cross-country skating is steep, and skate-skiing is not perfected overnight. "To get really efficient at skate-skiing takes some practice, but it's worth it, because the fun factor is as high as anything I've ever done." says Dan. "Not only is skate skiing tons of fun, but it will make you a much better in-line skater!"
A big "Thank You!" to Andrew Hall and his staff at Tahoe Donner Cross-Country for hosting the event and providing great equipment. Also, thanks to Geoffrey Faraghan and the Bay Area Inline Racers (B.A.I.R.) for organizing the core group of skaters.
