Nick picked up techniques so quickly and skied so fast that Dan wasn't able to give him many fine tuning tips, because he was always at the front of the group. With a few minor adjustments his herringbone technique, shown here, would be spotless. In herringbone the opposite ski and pole work together. They should be parallel and hit the snow at about the same time. The pole acts as the "push" pole does in V1 technique, pushing you onto the opposite ski. As the pole comes forward, the body turns toward the opposite ski, and the hand comes across the body. After the pole plant, the hand pushes back through the long axis of the pole, and at the same time the body twists to open up and then face the other ski. In all techniques it is important to use your body weight and stomach muscles to your advantage.
