Dan demonstrates the asymmetric nature of V1 skating technique. Dan turns his body to face the right ski so that both poles and right ski are parallel. All three contact the snow at the same time, making his right side the strong side or "hang" side. The term "hang" stems from the fact that he hangs his weight on the right pole. His left pole becomes the "push" pole, contacting the snow with his left hand relatively low at about the mid-line of his body. This helps to push his center of mass in the same direction as his right ski. While hanging on the right pole and pushing with the left he is compressing his body and loading up for a huge right leg push. Dan attempts to turn toward and stand tall on his left leg to get as much glide as he can out of it. The slope is steep though and he doesn't have the momentum to stay there for very long, and then it's back to the right.
