The Social Skate movement gathered momentum in the Windy City as Chicagoans took to the streets and showed the world a raucous good time on the evening of Friday, July 9, 1999.

In order to lay the stress on having fun safely, Salomon skates bestowed blinking lights on every skater. Skaters pranced between street sculptures in the architecturally diverse downtown area like fireflies on a mid-summer's night.

Chief social skate instigator David R. Cooper was on hand to lead out the festivities. He appeared on streetcorners like the Cheshire cat, blowing out a skate tune on his harmonica.

The social skate was used by everyone as a supreme release for the maniacal tensions of everyday existence. Frequent hydration stops and safety meetings encouraged flavorful comingling of the skate masses. Old friendships strengthened and new ones were born.
