Di, 11, was pretty photogenic in this photo I took of him in his little village of Suka-Jaya, way far away from the nearest city of Sumbawa Besar on the island of Sumbawa, two islands east of Bali. Di was my guide in the mountains and on the coast. He taught me how to flip over little crabs running back in the wave swash on the beach, and eat them in their soft shells after tossing them in the fire for a minute or two. I found the sea crabs cooked in their own briny juices more flavorful than the ones we caught and cooked on the gunung, or mountain, we turned over rocks and caught them with our bare hands for roasting over the fire. What a lunch! And how about those teeth?
