Racing against camels in Egypt is one sure way to get your adrenaline pumping in the desert. Normally focused on rustling up business with tourists, the camel dudes wanted nothing more than to race 150 meter sprints against the tourist with the funny shoes.

The police camels were easy bait, allowing me to rack up some early victories. The fiercely proud Bedouins with their well-fed camels were another story. Like lightning out of the blocks, they had some serious kick which got them over the line foaming at the mouth but frequently in front.

Hameddah and Awan were my fiercest rivals, accounting for most of my losses. Other camel owners sought them out to be jockeys for their camels. Awan got smart and figured he could win by running me off the road! The final score? Eddy 9, Camels 7. Too close for comfort, but at leastI know now that I can outskate a police camel chasing after me!
