Good old times came alive as a half-dozen magazine editors joined Zephyr Tours, Salomon skates, and Eddy Matzger for a trip into the unfettered life of the Pennsylvania Amish, May 1-2, 1999, in and around Ephrata, PA.

The smell of cut grass and manure was everywhere, fecund reminders of perhaps the most productive non-irrigated farmland in the world. Horses and buggies remain the chief form of transportation for the Amish, who also travel the bucolic stretches of the Pennsylvania countryside on bicycle, scooter, or with mules. Although normally shy and reserved, the Amish folk found sharing their roads with skaters a downright pleasant diversion.
