The 2001 Superweek of Inline Skating came back strongly thanks to the tireless efforts of Jim White, Ken and Iris, Sue, and countless others who helped give skating a good name with 5 superb days of racing, July 18-22, in and around Milwuakee, Wisconsin. TWINCAM/Salomon racer Eddy Matzger showed his torrid mid-summer form and won the lion's share of the Pro Men's racing. The courses were divine. All closed. Park-like! Try Whitnall Park, Brewer's Park, Schlitz Park, and Miller Park for starters, and cap off the fun with a carnival-like criterium through the streets of Waukesha. Pre-hydrate plenty before the races! You'll have to brave the mid to high 90's and high humidity at race time. Race your heart to its max and back off if you get the chills! Hang out under a hose after the finish and drink until you're distended! The Cats raced early and got the crowd going. Local kids from day care lined the course and were recruited to yell and chant as skaters went by. "Rain-bo Rain-bo!" they yelled as a brightly colored Rainbo skinsuit came charging up the hill. "Ze-bra Ze-bra!" they'd yell as Sandra came barreling up in her black and white striped sports bra. Or "Mus-cles Mus-cles!" as Ron Brylski powered along. The atmosphere was conducive to meeting and greeting. And you couldn't beat 5 consecutive days of heavenly competition under the most meticulously cared-for conditions possible. And the more days you raced, the more cash and raffle prizes you stood to win. And win win win is what everybody did. Thanks to all involved for making Superweek such a super time! skatecentral |
