Fun skate aside, everybody still had a blast at the races, where Raiateans and Tahitians had a chance to dash for prizes and bragging rights. Everybody had a chance to contest the 2K sprints on August 7, 2001. Aspiring racers were seeded and released in 5 second increments for an exciting real time finish.

20K and 30K races were held on the morning of the 8th, and skaters got fully decked out for the occasion. Everybody dished out some serious effort and a tight pack worked hard before attacks by top talent Kiki and Marius shattered the peleton.

Kiki's superior fitness was evident as Eddy continually had to bring Marius back into play in his draft. Kiki showed signs of cracking on a number of occasions when Eddy inserted himself in between and let Marius drift off the front to form a large gap. Or Eddy provided shelter for Marius while Kiki swam off the front, then attacked hard together.

In the women's 20K, Lindsay won to everyone's delight -- except all the girls she beat out!

All good practice for the real world, since Kiki will come to California September 3, 2001 for three months of training and racing in the United States. These kids are making such progress that it won't be long before you see them all in print way up high in the results!
