"Matzger edges in-line racers," read the headline in the Ottawa Citizenon Monday May 14, 2001, one day after Eddy won the National Capital Inline Marathon as part of the annual Tulip Festival.

"California competitor wins race in four-man sprint to wire," continued the article by Martin Cleary:

"Eddy Matzger, of Berkeley, California, felt right at home on his way to victory in the men's inline skate marathon yesterday.

The race took Matzger past Carleton University, and he lives on Carleton Street in Berkeley. As well, he took note of the many beds of tulips, which reminded him of the tulips growing in his own garden, a gift from his Dutch grandmother years ago.

He won the race in one hour 17 minutes 55.9 seconds beating four other men in a sprint to the finish line.

'I expected to have to reach (with his leg) for the finish line, but I guess everybody was tired from playing around in the race,' said Matzger, 33.

Ottawa's Barry Publow was fifth in 1:17:57.4.

Beth Clark of Cambridge, Ont., captured the women's inline maraton in 1:24:14.5, while Dominique Larocque of Ottawa was fouorth (1:28:30.5) and Hull's Suzanne Dionne was fifth (1:28:31.4).

The race was part of the National Capital Race Weekend, which was sponsored by the Ottawa Citizen"
