The New York City 100K in Brooklyn's Prospect Park was a true fall classic with its most thrilling finish ever. On Saturday, September 23, 2000, after two hours and 56 minutes of warfare on wheels, EC Beast's Fourth Lacey earned victory in a five-man dash for the line. On the women's side, Helle Carlson (EAS) surged and soloed to victory, with a pack of five in dogged pursuit. Heather Pennypacker (EC Beast) won the field sprint over Ann Krieg (Salomon), Martine Charbonneau (Miller Canada), and local favorite Barry Hartman (Empire Speed). Defending champion Eddy Matzger (TWINCAM/Salomon/Explore) tried to fry the competition by breaking away with one lap (5K) to go. Salomon's Benoit Perthuis came with and powered the breakaway to within 200 meters of the finish, where the two were caught by a ramped-up pack and passed in the final meters. Fourth Lacey won, who had earlier been dropped and caught back on, narrowly edging out Joey Flesher (Fila Verducci), Dane Lewis (Hyper), Eddy Matzger (TWINCAM), and Phillip Boulard (Frisia - NYC 100K winner in 1998). The fitness and recreational divisions were stocked with burgeoning numbers of budding talent. Skaters had their cake and ate it too: many chose to complete the 26.2 mile marathon distance so that afterwards they could watch the pros finish too. Fall descended as a curtain of rain soon after the pros were finished, but that failed to dampen anybody's enthusiasm and sense of achievement. Summer came back strong in the evening, when skaters and volunteers danced the balmy night away on the Chelsea Piers. News Home |
