The kids put on a real show of sportsmanship and fun at the Salomon Sprints on Friday, September 13, 2002, in Duluth, Minnesota. Kids ages 3-14 raced over distances from 25 to 100 meters with the ultimate prize being the joy of participation and the chance to win Salomon protective gear and adjustable skates.

Eddy Matzger was on hand to deliver a safety briefing and dispense nuggets of advice to the young competitors. "Don't slide but roll like a hot-dog if you fall," was one tip. "Start with running duck steps, then swing your arms as if you're pulling a rope as you start skating," was another offering.

Advice was taken to heart. Nary a soul changed their lane as the finish drew near, and swinging arms and elbows were used for balance, not to grab others for getting ahead.

The cheerleading charge was led by the biggest kid, Eddy, who conducted choruses of chants to egg on all the sprinters awaiting the starting gun. Faces displayed whole ranges of emotions such that every moment was more precious than all the iron ore in the range.
