While Joseph Nderitu made it a hat trick, ILQ-9 inline racer Eddy Matzger and elite runner Utta Pippig narrowly missed defending their 2001 & 2002 titles at the hotly contested 2003 MDS Nordion 10K & National Capital Inline Marathon in Canada's capital city of Ottawa. The weekend of running and inline events broke the 20,000 participation mark for the first time in its 29 year history.

Without a hired rabbit to set the pace and provide shelter from the wind, Matzger was compelled to try and shake things up himself. His attack-happy style of racing perturbed many a skater, who could only watch Eddy fade back and burst forth while employing his video camera.

When Eddy did take a brief respite from his demonic whacking, a good chuckle was had when heads kept twisting around and glancing back like so many worried gophers, nervously awaiting the next inevitable acceleration.

Canadian skaters proved themselves to be on the move in the 10K, winning both male and female events. The marathon was a clean sweep by Empire Speed: Helen Havam won amongst the females, Bret Whitman topped all men. TWINCAM's Eddy Matzger was second in both events in close sprint finishes. He raced on a five by 84mm skate on Saturday and on a 100mm rig on Sunday.

Although denied his hat trick, Matzger did complete a Triple Crown of sorts by completing both inline events and later running the half marathon, which he completed in 1:42, or about 589th place!
