Matzger Hammers for Gold in Half Marathon

If you've ever wanted some down-home racing in the middle of nowhere without having to pay heed to the middle line, then the Hoyt Lakes Half Marathon is your kind of race. Fill the road! The Half Marathon attracted the cream of the skating world from the Twin Cities and the Duluth areas.

As long as you kept in motion and stuck to the road you wouldn't have a problem with the mosquitoes, which seem to grow about as big as the walleyes and buzz about as loudly as the loons.

Skaters numbered in the hundreds and looked like they owned the out and back roller-coaster course. Terry Holm was able to sneak away after two photo-op acclerations by Eddy Matzger, and the two were able to stay away -- just barely -- from the seething pack. Holm hung on by a thread and exerted himself so heavily that his out-of-breath panting turned into loud exhalatory screams, which Eddy matched all the way to the finish.

For the women, Kara Parker asserted her primacy by taking the trophy convincingly.

Good form was on display no matter how far down the road you looked. The awards ceremeony had a friendly feel and nearly everybody skated away with a fabulous prize. Thanks for all the hard work everybody!
