Last year it was the brutal headwinds. This year it was the slippery slopes. Skaters had the honor of slogging through a tough, wet course and complete the ultimate fall skating classic, the 23rd annual Athens to Atlanta Roadskate on October 24, 2004.

TWINCAM's Eddy Matzger staggered into the finish first in 4 hours and 53 minutes, fending off a late surge by Italy's Mauro Guenci. Matzger had seen snow and nearly collapsed as his two minute lead evaporated into thin air 3 miles from the finish. Eddy's sprint victory came on ILQ-9 Classics (unbelievable!), Star Grip 110mm and 100mm carbon fiber wheels (awesome!), K2 frames (hot!), and fall classic custom camouflage boots (too much!).

Kimberly Perkins busted a whole bunker of challengers with her third consecutive victory in 5 hours and 27 minutes, catching and passing first-time finisher Kim Ames.

Remember though, A to A is not a race, just a timed event where gold, silver, and bronze medals are given out. It's all about the real skaters, like Tom McCue, 3rd on the all-time enduro skater's list.

"I'm a citizen skater," McCue said at the awards ceremony when he was recognized for surpassing the 1,000 total miles milestone. "I'm on the moon tonight, no over the moon, because there I am right next to Eddy Matzger on the all-time rankings!" Long live skaters like Tom, who give our sport core strength. In 2005 then, may the forecast be for dry conditions and stiff tailwinds. Hang tight! Even if you had a tough year this time, one of these years the Athens to Atlanta 87 mile roadskate is bound to get easier. keep coming out and racking up those miles!
