The US 10K National Inline Championships on Monday, September 3, 2001, in Atlanta, GA,. lived up to its reputation as the world's toughest 10K as TWINCAM/Salomon skater Eddy Matzger was literally elbowed into submission in the final meters by a Verducci skater. The real burn is always the 6 steep hills that make up "The World's Toughest 10K". But it also hurts when foul play determines the outcome of such a prestigious event. TWINCAM skater Matzger had a clear line up through the middle during the final sprint, only to have it rudely closed off by brute force. "The third place guy tried to come through and there was not enough room." explained Verducci's Derek Downing on television. Television offered to replay the finish to show how the Verducci skater actually changed lanes and blocked the faster moving TWINCAM skater. The official declined to review the tape. Dane Lewis was first, Derek Downing second, and TWINCAM/Salomon's Eddy Matzger was third. Few complained about the wet roads. Peachtree Road Rollers brightened up the day considerably, as did Team in Training members in their colorful and bold skinsuits.
